We get so many messages in our lives about what is expected and how we "should" be living; social media, friends, and culture can all provide an idea of what we should be reaching for, which can often feel confusing and frustrating. If we grow up with dysfunction and trauma, it can seem even more confusing. We struggle with these expectations and somehow still feel we are coming up short. It can become an exhausting pursuit! It gets harder and harder to listen to our own voice, and what our needs are. I am drawn to helping people who have dealt with trauma and feel persistent isolation and sadness in their daily lives. Together, we can try to look at things a different way, and navigate a different path. Let's explore together, like astronauts! By gaining perspective, we can find opportunities for strength and agency in our everyday lives. By connecting to new support, we can make our own space to think about things we didn't know were possible. My goal is to create a safe space for exploration and support you on this path. Making the first step can be intimidating, but we can also go to new places. Contact me to setup a free consultation call to figure out how we can move forward together.

I am Katy, a Psychotherapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 15 years of experience in mental health and social services on both coasts. I believe all human beings deserve to live a life that is rich and full and free of suffering, and that this requires lots of work, and lots of help. While you may be experiencing anxiety, depression, or the effects of traumas that leave you struggling to cope, you also carry with you inner wisdom and strengths and skills waiting to be developed. I believe that every person has a lifelong capacity for change, and that you deserve healing. I am passionate about helping adolescents and young adults find their footing in the world, supporting women who are navigating the effects of trauma and systemic violence, and empowering LGBTQIA+ individuals to find freedom and safety. I utilize tools from CBT, DBT, and mindfulness, and also challenge you to try out new perspectives and skills, develop new insights, and explore new boundaries. The first step is reaching out. I welcome you, all of you - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I welcome the part of you that wants to scream and perhaps doesn’t know how to. I welcome the part of you that is screaming and not being heard. I welcome the part of you that constantly criticizes you – whose voice is that? I welcome the many versions of you as a child – carefree? careful? I welcome the parts of you that are shining and the parts of you that are hiding. I welcome the parts of you that feel uncontrollable and the parts of you that you keep in order. I welcome the parts you want to get rid of and the parts you cling onto. Our work together is about inviting all your inner selves to the table and hearing them out – how is each part, some seemingly “bad,” trying to help you?
I'm so glad you've started this journey to improve your mental wellbeing. I know how difficult beginnings can be—I’ve worked with a number of first-time and returning therapy clients from backgrounds as diverse as New York City itself. I particularly enjoy working with LGBTQIA+ clients and people with disabilities and neurodivergences. I do my best to honor your cultural experience as we tackle some of life’s biggest challenges together: depression and anxiety, trauma and grief, chronic illness and medical issues, relationship difficulties and life transitions, and problematic drug use or other behaviors that may no longer be serving you. My own career began in worker organizing, then moved into community social work and social policy research. I have a deep appreciation for how relationships and social realities impact mental health and prioritize a relational and social change-oriented approach. Disability justice, racial justice, and gender justice are core tenets of my practice. My work is also influenced by my own experiences as a therapy client: I strive to be as transparent as possible about what we’re doing and why, so you can be a full partner on the journey and never feel left in the dark. Above all, I am person-centered: I start by learning who you are as an individual, your strengths and challenges, and then figure out which clinical approaches can work best for you. I often draw from Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and am pursuing further training in these modalities. I very much look forward to meeting you and taking this journey together!
Hi! I am Dr. Monica Johnson. If you’re reading this, it means you are taking your mental and emotional health seriously and researching someone who will be a good fit for your journey. This is exciting! Let me tell you more about me to help you with your decision making process. I am a Licensed Psychologist in NYC, but some people think of me as a problem solving pro, empowerment guru, and self-compassion guide! I partner with my patients to find pathways to a better life. I work best with people who are tired of being stuck and ready to make changes. I can’t change you. Only you can do that, but I’m super excited to be your side kick on the journey and help you highlight roads to success. One of the most important things to know about me is that I am NOT a smile and nod type of therapist. I get down in the trenches with you. I’m down to earth and real with you through this process which means I will call you out on your BS and help you figure out what to do with it. We will work hard and laugh a lot. For the record, there is nothing off limits or shameful in therapy. I’ve seen it all and heard it all. If you need to talk about sex, money, medical issues, or “that one time in Amsterdam,” don’t hesitate! I work with people of all backgrounds (race, gender, sexuality, religion, alternative relationships) and you should expect that I will affirm your identity while helping you to develop a fuller self concept. My job is to help you tap into strengths you already possess (we all have them even if we can’t see them yet) and create new ones! If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, feel constantly overwhelmed by your emotions, past traumas, poor relationships, low self esteem, or just deciding what the next step is in your career/life, I can help.
I am an LCSW specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma and co-occurring mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety and trauma. An eating disorder can consume your life. Eating disorders are about complex issues that impact your physical and mental health. They are a way of coping with difficult thoughts and emotions through disturbances in eating behaviors. Full recovery is possible. Using psychodynamic interventions, EMDR and behavioral techniques such as CBT, DBT and Mindfulness, I help clients access and express their thoughts and emotions, find relief from physical symptoms, heal through practicing self-compassion, and become motivated to make meaningful changes in their lives. My work is collaborative and supportive, emphasizing emotional healing and personal growth. Together we will work creatively to explore your life, identify ways to overcome your challenges, and connect with your strengths and resilience.
Life can be overwhelming. The challenges of living with social isolation, emotional pain, grief, anxiety and depression can prevent us from living the life we desire. Low self esteem and destructive urges and behaviors deter from productive and satisfying lives. Together, we'll improve your ability to express your feelings, reflect on your reactions and behaviors, develop life skills and gain awareness that can lead you to a more effective and full-filling life. When you make the decision to attend therapy, you are making the decision to prioritize your wellbeing in a fundamentally unique way. Therapy is something that can be challenging, but also transformative– Especially for those who have not been listened to, believed, or had the freedom to pause and practice introspection due to the demands of life. Knowing the challenges of finding a therapist who can understand your life experiences, I prioritize working with communities with whom I share personal experience. This includes, but is not limited to: LGBTQIA+, polyamorous/ENM, BDSM/kink, sex worker, SA/DV survivors, neurodivergent, chronically ill & disabled communities. My work is grounded in Relational-Cultural Therapy, which emphasizes the importance of the relationship between therapist and client as an essential part of the therapeutic process. I aim to minimize power dynamics in the room between therapist and client, and firmly believe you are the expert of your life. Rather than an authority in the room, I see my role as a collaborator in helping you achieve your therapy goals. For those who wish to know my social location: I am a Black, queer, disabled, neurodivergent, polyamorous, non-binary therapist in my 30s. I come from a middle-class background in a mixed race household, am a US citizen, and was raised Catholic but am not religious. I approach therapy as a team effort grounded in trauma-informed, anti-racist, fat liberatory, sex & kink positive, and feminist ideals. My therapy practice is eclectic, borrowing from multiple modalities in order to find the best approach for each individual client, couple, or polycule. Common approaches I incorporate include: EFT (emotion focused therapy), IFS (internal family systems), Sex Therapy, and Attachment Theory. I work with clients on a variety of topics, but special interests include: Unpacking attachment wounds using IFS; Transition stages in Poly/ENM; Freedom from shame regarding sex & kink; Impacts of disability; Relationships to health, disordered eating, and/or fatness from a fat liberatory and body neutrality lens. If you are curious about working together, please email lowell@expressyourselftherapynyc.com to set up a free consultation.
As a therapist I focus on developing a greater sense of awareness and presence. I believe that we all want to be understood and accepted at a deep level. I respect your courage and time investment to be willing to look within and make uncomfortable changes. I work in collaborative way and strive to create a safe, accepting and caring environment that I hope is also challenging and insightful to my clients. committed to resolving unhealthy thinking, perceptions, and behaviors. My goal is to work interactively with you to identify flawed schemas that no longer serve you to come together to build new patterns of being. I'm not the kind of therapist who nods & asks: "How do you feel about that?" My approach is integrative and I am trained in IFS, EMDR, and Psychodynamic modalities.
