Trauma impedes our natural ability as humans to be able to identify and reach goals, and connect and form relationships with others. I know that this can all be worked through with a positive therapeutic relationship and guidance to rediscovering the inner knowing you possess about what you truly need to thrive. My personal approach to therapy is what allows for others to connect with me- I am laid-back, direct, funny, caring, and most of all, nonjudgemental. I provide that open space of comfort that is needed to be your authentic self.

Healing takes courage—and you don’t have to do it alone. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor offering telehealth sessions across Wisconsin, and I specialize in supporting college students and young adults who feel stuck, anxious, or disconnected from themselves. My own healing journey has shaped the way I show up in therapy: real, compassionate, and non-judgmental. I know what it’s like to face pain and choose growth, and I create a space where you can feel seen, understood, and empowered to make lasting change. Life can feel overwhelming. Between academic pressures, relationships, family expectations, and figuring it all out, it’s easy to feel weighed down or anxious. In therapy, we’ll explore what’s holding you back, uncover patterns that no longer serve you, and develop practical tools to manage stress, build resilience, and reconnect with your inner strength. This is a collaborative space where your voice matters, your feelings are valid, and your growth is the priority. I use a variety of evidence-based therapies including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), psychodynamic therapy, and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), combined with mindfulness, body awareness, and practical coping strategies. I help young adults break free from old patterns, process what hurts, and build confidence, clarity, and resilience—supporting healing on every level: mind, body, and spirit. I bring authenticity, empathy, and even a touch of humor to sessions so you can feel safe, challenged, and supported as you grow. In our first session, we’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, clarify your goals, and begin shaping a personalized plan that works for your life. Flexible telehealth sessions make it easy to start from anywhere—dorm, apartment, or home. Together, we’ll take intentional steps toward healing, growth, and empowerment. Whether it’s anxiety, trauma, grief, or simply feeling stuck, therapy can be a turning point—and I’ll be here to walk alongside you. Your next chapter starts here.
I appreciate the time you are taking to choose the best person and process for your specific needs. Being a college student requires a lot of difficult choices, and I know finding a counselor can be hard as well. Here are some thoughts about how I work, but please contact me if you have other questions. My goal as a counselor is to shape our work around the needs, goals, and overall direction you want to take in your life. If you have very focused, concrete issues you want to address, we’ll use a solution-focused approach to create plans and strategies for focused change and growth. If you have more broad, complicated things to address, we talk about a deeper purpose and meaning for your life that can serve as a foundation for more significant changes. No matter what you would like to talk about in counseling, we will capitalize on your strengths as a whole person to create the change you seek.

Please look at my website to check your insurance if you'd like to work with me: (copy and paste if needed :) https://headway.co/providers/kristin-mccarty?utm_source=pem&utm_medium=direct_link&utm_campaign=67013 What is your client focus? I work with college students and adults who are dealing with the pressure of academics, social dynamics, and the big transitions that come with this stage of life. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, stress, or feeling disconnected from yourself, I’m here to help. Together, we can explore how to manage the demands of school, relationships, and future goals, while also addressing any underlying beliefs or past experiences that may be affecting you. What is your communication style? I focus on creating a comfortable, judgment-free environment built on trust and respect. Depending on what feels right for you, I can offer quiet reflection or take a more proactive, coaching-style approach. My goal is to adapt to your unique needs, making sure our time together feels collaborative and safe so you can explore your challenges at your own pace. How do you approach goal setting with clients? When we set goals, we’ll look at three main areas: what’s happening in your life right now, how past experiences or beliefs may be shaping your current behaviors, and what you want to achieve in the future. We’ll break things down into manageable steps, adjusting along the way as needed to help you move toward your goals, whether that’s feeling more confident, managing stress better, or making big life decisions. What should clients expect during a first session with you? In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know each other. You can share about your college experience, relationships, and what’s currently causing stress or frustration. I’ll listen closely, and together we’ll identify some initial goals to work on. By the end of the session, I hope you’ll feel heard and leave with a sense of hope and direction for what’s next. Tell us about your journey to becoming a therapist. I’ve always been sensitive to emotions and found art and creativity to be healing when I was younger. During college, I struggled with panic attacks, and that experience led me to discover the power of therapy and healing techniques. My journey inspired me to help others going through similar challenges. Now, I combine traditional therapy with mindfulness and energy healing, using what I’ve learned to help college students like you find balance, heal, and grow.

Hi! My main goal is always to help my clients to help themselves, so you feel empowered to embrace stress and change as it comes. With experience working in an eating disorder hospital and 7 years working as a therapist in the Athletic Depts at UT Austin and CU Boulder, I've been involved with supporting my clients through the life challenges that high schoolers, young adults, and adults face for my entire professional career. I am EMDR certified and use this to treat trauma, eating disorders, chronic pain, urges in addiction/EDs, and sport performance (both positive reinforcement as well as treating mental blocks). I particularly enjoy teaching tools for navigating anxiety and depressive symptoms, helping to make peace with body image, and supporting mental performance for sport. I also have a passion for supporting perfectionists to expand their view of themselves and learn to release a little of the control that is actually controlling them!
